Voices From the Ezras Nashim

This has been a week of enormous physical and spiritual labor. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were consumed with the task of assisting in moving my mother who is almost 97 (may she live to be 120) from her lovely and spacious two bedroom two bath apartment in an independent living facility into a one bedroom apartment in an assisted living facility. While infants grow from dependence to independence aging brings a reverse of the process. Mom is no longer able to see or hear well and needs greater assistance with the tasks of daily living, but her mind is alert and she mourns the loss of what was. For my sister and me it was a week of finding photos of Mom’s and our youth. It was a time to recognize fully that nothing ever stays the same.

Yesterday was the yartzeit of my Mom’s brother, Aaron Hersh ben Meir, HaLevi. May his neshamah have an aliyah. My Uncle Aaron was a constant visitor in my youth and taking the bus to his apartment in Brownsville was one of my first independent travels.  He had a marvelous sense of humor and absolutely loved custard pies with glazed fruit on the top. I smile every time I see such a pie.

Tonight is the yartzeit of a gentleman I met under very adverse conditions when he was 95 years old.  Although he had been married for 49 years he and his wife had no children. Harry was a seaman in his early life and a good friend when I met him. May his neshamah have an aliyah.

Perhaps the hardest spiritual burden of the week was the news that a dearly beloved friend who has been out of my life for many years is struggling with a dread and horrible disease. May he be granted peace and a respite from pain.

Gamzu L’tova with tears.
