Voices From the Ezras Nashim

This week we begin reading the book of Devarim. We read Moshe's retelling of our travels and travails in the dessert. Since Moshe knows that he will die before the people he has led enter the land of Israel he uses this opportunity to chastise us for our weaknesses and our lack of faith in HaShem and HaShem's promise to guide us safely to our land. How rooted we are in the same faults all these many years later. The land of Israel calls, begs and pleads for us to come and settle--to fulfill all the mitzvot of the land and to speak from the land a message of righteousness. Whether it is inertia, fear or laziness that keeps us rooted in a land where the president believes he has the right to dictate that HaShem's Jerusalem should be divided we must hear again the words of Moshe and know that they apply to us today. May we not forget the anguish of Tisha B'Av. May we use that anguish to propel us forward speedily to resettle the land HaShem has given to us for all time.
