Voices From the Ezras Nashim

Yesterday our dear friend Reb Yechiel attempted to bring my computer communications into the 21st century. I have been most reluctant to give up the computer I overpaid for in 1998 and am a really slow learner when it comes to technology. Nonetheless here I am at a new Dell which communicates around the world in the blink of an eye. I must say that for the first time I truly understand the dilemma of those who use the internet to excess. It is exciting to hear news, watch video clips and to click on web teaser headlines. I do hope that the temptation is temporary. Indeed I will do my best to make it temporary because there are so many things in HaShem's world that really need doing. While some of those things, especially learning from Torah sites can be accomplished on the web, many of the things that need to be done are hands on and require personal contact.

I guess too that there is a connection between my new found explorations and this week's parsha—Bamidbar. I feel as though I have been led from the slavery of mitzraim into the desert and new freedom. At the same time I am not so different than our ancestors who had trouble dealing with their freedom and often complained that slavery was not so bad. My old slow computer allowed me time to think and digest and to reconsider my clicks because sites took so long to open. There is no doubt that with added freedom in the midbar or on the internet there are lessons in personal restraint to be learned.
